Celebrating Earth Day at The Black Hammock: How We Contribute to a Healthier Lake Jesup

Earth Day, which falls on April 22 this year, is a great time to recognize the beauty and diversity that makes our planet special. It’s also an opportunity to reflect on what every individual can do to adopt an environmentally-conscious attitude and preserve the wonders of nature for future generations.

The theme for Earth Day 2022 is “Invest in Our Planet.” When viewed on a global scale, the challenges can seem insurmountable, which is why it’s best to focus on what you can do in your own backyard.

The Black Hammock is inextricably tied to the health and vitality of Lake Jesup and participates in a variety of local efforts to maintain a balanced ecosystem and preserve the beauty of this Florida gem.

The Lake Jesup Cleanup Project

In 2021, The Black Hammock participated in the AECOM Lake Jesup Cleanup Project, intended to filter toxic algae from the water and repurpose it in beneficial and innovative ways.

For example, some of the algae collected was transformed into biofuel, while some was used to make shoes. The Black Hammock was pleased to contribute, host a news conference about the project, and offer airboat tours to the barge for demonstrations of its progress.

Improving Water Quality Through Native Planting

As a participant in the Seminole Education, Restoration, and Volunteer (SERV) Program, The Black Hammock joined volunteers in planting a range of native flora, including 1,000 duck potato, 1,000 pickerelweed, 30 fire flag, and 50 golden canna plants.

These native species not only beautify the shoreline, but they help to improve water quality, adding much-needed nutrients to repair and balance the ecosystem.

Contributing to Lake Jesup Restoration

The Watershed Management Division of the Public Works Department works tirelessly toward restoring Lake Jesup, with massive volunteer projects aimed at keeping the environs healthy and beautiful. The Black Hammock provides essential support and transportation for volunteers via airboat service.

Non-Disruptive Airboat Tours

There’s more to Lake Jesup than breathtaking scenery — the water is teeming with life, from alligators and turtles to a wide range of birds, such as sandpipers, wild turkeys, and even bald eagles. Part of the fun of taking an airboat tour is marveling at local wildlife

Unfortunately, some Orlando airboat rides are noisy and disruptive, frightening away wildlife. This disruption can not only be disappointing for avid bird watchers, but it’s not ideal for animals just trying to live their best life.

The Black Hammock has created routes designed to quietly circle Bird Island, home to over 500 wading birds, to allow for minimally-invasive viewing of wildlife without disrupting their daily routines.

Vacation Rentals for Earth Day

In addition to providing fun activities and outstanding food, The Black Hammock offers several nearby vacation rentals with proximity to local attractions and amenities, such as airports (Sanford and Orlando), Downtown Orlando, beaches, and more.

Some are within walking distance of The Black Hammock, Lake Jesup, or other attractions, so you can enjoy the best Florida has to offer on Earth Day while minimizing pollution and waste.
